VT KnowledgeWorks Member Company Launches Crowdfunding Campaign

From VT KnowledgeWorks member company Handshake Media, Incorporated:

Health Tech Hatch (Hatch), a crowdfunding and development resource for entrepreneurs creating innovative health and wellness products and companies, announced the launch on its site of a new crowdfunding campaign for Cognichoice – The App That Helps People Change. Designed for companies in the health care industry who would offer it to the patient communities they serve with common problems – such as type 2 diabetes, obesity, heart disease, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, alcoholism or substance abuse – Cognichoice (TM) delivers a personal awareness and social sharing software platform to users in web, mobile web, and mobile versions, based on evidence-based techniques that result in behavior change.

Cognichoice - The App That Helps People Change

Anne Giles Clelland, M.A., M.S., founder and president of Handshake Media, Incorporated, a VT KnowledgeWorks member company, and founder of Handshake 2.0, originated the concept for Cognichoice and  Alexander Edelman, a Ph.D. student in physics at the University of Chicago, is the founding developer. Clelland and Edelman designed the Cognichoice software platform to help people make real changes in their lives – to start doing what they need to do and to stop doing what they know they shouldn’t.

“Behavioral science tells us that healthy changes can happen when we believe we can change, become personally more aware, and get a little help from our friends. That’s exactly what Cognichoice is about,” says Clelland. “We seek more research partners to demonstrate Cognichoice’s efficacy in producing health outcomes. If our crowdfunding campaign on Health Tech Hatch is successful, we’ll have funds to support additional research projects.”

Offered as custom editions of "white label" web browser-based, mobile web, and mobile device software to companies and organizations in the health care industry that are mission-driven and prevention-driven, Cognichoice seeks research partners with which to test the efficacy of the app with multiple patient populations.  While the software platform is being used in a pilot study in collaboration with an academic research hospital, Clelland estimates the need for at least two more studies before reaching the tipping point with clinicians who will in turn prescribe the app to their patients.

“Cognichoice’s business model is B2B, scalable, global and targets the healthcare industry, all of which make it an app that shows tremendous promise for success,” says Patricia Salber, CEO of Health Tech Hatch. “Unlike the 95 percent of health apps submitted directly to consumers without testing, Cognichoice is already being used in a pilot study with an academic research hospital and a subset of its  obese and overweight patient populations. This important differentiator is why we believe it has the potential to be a successfully crowdfunded initiative.”

Developers of the Cognichoice app, who will run the fundraising endeavor now through February 15, 2013, hope to raise $67,000 to fund additional research studies. The direct ask of the campaign is for money to support the software development needed to create an edition of Cognichoice for each study to continue to help prove the efficacy of the app.

Those interested can sign up for news from Cognichoice and follow the story of Cognichoice's crowdfunding on Handshake 2.0.

You Will Be Googled

From Anne Giles Clelland, Handshake Media, Incorporated, a VT KnowledgeWorks member company.

In the early days of doing business in 2012, we're not asking as we did in 2009, "Have you Googled yourself?" but stating what savvy business people think to themselves after that first word-of-mouth (WOM) referral or that first handshake of introduction: "I will Google you."

A version of I Will Google You first appeared on Handshake 2.0.

In the physical world of business, "It's who you know" begins introductory handshakes that can lead to handshakes on deals.

In the online world of business, "It's still who you know" begins a knowledge-based consideration of a handshake. But how to get known? We founded Handshake 2.0 with "It's still who you know" as a tagline to assist good companies in sharing good information about their good companies to help them get known well.

Anne GooglingWe may need to change Handshake 2.0's tagline to this: "It's still who you know – and it's what they know."

If someone in my "It's who you know" network introduces me to you for that introductory handshake and the first impression was a good one, I will return to my office and Google you.

I will Google your name, your company's name, your name + your company's name, your company's name + your industry, etc.

Why am I using Google to get to "know" you? Two reasons.

1) I want to decrease business risk.

I want to see what's online about you to learn that you are who you say you are, that your company truly exists, and that what you say about yourself and what others say about you match my impression. The more due diligence-based trust I can place in you and your corporate practices, the less risk I take.

2) I want to increase competitive advantage.

I am finding Shoshana Zuboff's assertion in The Support Economy to be increasingly true: there are two economies, one in the physical world, one online, and my company needs to operate strategically in both. I Google you to learn that your company is operating competitively in its industry both online and off. I want to learn that doing business with your company would be good for my company.

When I find your company's site, I'm glad to see Twitter and Facebook icons, but I click or tap through to see how active you are in social media. I look for the quantity and quality of your activity. My company needs your company to be participating in "both economies." If you're not competitive in one whole economy, that makes doing business with you less advantageous than doing business with someone who is competitive in both.

Handshake 2.0 is an enterprise of Handshake Media, Incorporated and as Handshake Media's representative, I will be extending handshakes of greeting in both the physical and online worlds of business in 2012. I look forward to meeting you. I will return to my office later and Google you. If we're at a business luncheon and the meeting is boring, with my smartphone, I won't wait. Within minutes of meeting you, I'll be Googling you.

VT KnowledgeWorks Blog Extends Global Handshake

From Anne Giles Clelland, founder of VT KnowledgeWorks member company Handshake Media, Incorporated. A version of this post first appeared on Handshake 2.0.

Inside VT KnowledgeWorks, the blog for business acceleration center VT KnowledgeWorks, was founded in 2007 to report and share news of its entrepreneurs, start-ups, member companies, partners, sponsors and events at VT KnowledgeWorks. VT KnowledgeWorks extends a global handshake of welcome!

From reflecting upon operating the VT KnowledgeWorks blog for four years and from analyzing four years of traffic to the VT KnowledgeWorks blog, I discovered these beauties:

  • When we started the blog in 2007, the top source of traffic was direct i.e. people knew of the blog and typed in the URL or clicked on a link in an email. Four years later, the top source of traffic is Google search results.
  • From 2007 to 2011, Google search users from 136 countries found what they sought on the VT KnowledgeWorks blog.
  • In 2007, VT KnowledgeWorks was an incubator serving technology companies and entrepreneurs in the Blacksburg, Virginia, USA area, home of Virginia Tech. Today, it is in partnership with universities and companies around the world. In 2011, its global site, VT KnowledgeWorks Global Partnership, surpassed its home site as a top source of traffic to the blog.

Inside VT KnowledgeWorks began in 2007 in a town when one person said, "How about a blog?" and a person at an organization said, "Yes."

Four years later, in 2011, that blog offers a global, entrepreneurial handshake and that town is a global destination for the VT KnowledgeWorks Global Partnership.

I am honored and delighted to have been part of reaching a handshake out to the globe's people on behalf of VT KnowledgeWorks.

From Automations Creations, Inc. and Handshake Media, Incorporated, VT KnowledgeWorks member companies. She Chooses(TM), the social network for women, is a joint spin-out from both companies. A version of this post first appeared on Handshake 2.0.

To add to the standard threesome – blog, Facebook, Twitter – of how online enterprises share their news, She Chooses has added video interviews with upcoming featured guests on She Chooses Chat and posted them on the She Chooses Channel on YouTube.  Each guest is asked a version of this question:  “If you only had two minutes to share with other women what you passionately believe is true, what would you say?”  Then the guest is to speak to the camera, in one take, in two minutes.

The video interview series debuted with the next featured guest on She Chooses Chat, Krisha Chachra.  Krisha Chachra is a native of Blacksburg, Virginia, a Ph.D. candidate at Virginia Tech, and a member of the Town Council of Blacksburg, Virginia.

She Chooses™ is the social network for women whose members choose what, how, and with whom they share.  Currently a web application released March 22, 2011 with a mobile app under development, She Chooses features an algorithm-based self-awareness and sharing component – Feel. Think. Choose. – that fosters meaningful personal reflection and authentic communication for and among its members.

Using the features of She Chooses, She Chooses Chat is a profoundly meaningful, completely unique event, a synthesis of personal reflection, conversation, discussion and sharing among She Chooses members.  Featured guests are women of note and the combination of their wisdom and experience increases the power of the event.

How to Customize a LinkedIn Public Profile URL

From Anne Giles Clelland, president of Handshake Media, Incorporated, a VT KnowledgeWorks member company.  A version of this post first appeared on Handshake 2.0.

How to create a custom URL for a LinkedIn public profile

As a URL to a Public Profile, LinkedIn assigns an indistinct and seemingly random mix of letters and numbers, something like this:
http://www.linkedin.com/pub/12/48x/36

or like this:
http://www.linkedin.com/pub/yourname/10/506/834

To create a custom, personally-identifying URL like this:
http://www.linkedin.com/in/annegilesclelland

you're invited to follow these directions:

Log in to your LinkedIn account.
From the tabs, select Profile > Edit Profile.
Scroll down to Public Profile.
To the right of the listed URL, click [Edit].
To the right of your profile, you will see "Your current URL."
Click "Customize your URL" beneath "Your current URL."
You will see:

Enhance your personal brand by creating a custom URL for your LinkedIn public profile. If you change your URL, your current custom URL will no longer be valid.
www.linkedin.com/in/yournamehere

After "www.linkedin.com/in" type in the URL of your choice, ideally your first and last names.

After you've saved your personal URL, click on your public profile to check its accuracy. You may now see numbers at the end of your name. Edit one more time to delete the numbers.

To encourage our business model based on candor, authenticity and transparency, we highly encourage Handshake 2.0 contributors to have LinkedIn profiles and to upload a photograph to their profiles and to make these visible to the public. We encourage contributors to make as much "Profile Content" public as they feel comfortable doing. "It's still who you know" and the better people are able to "know" someone – to the extent that's possible online – the more likely they are to trust and to do business with them.
