Company Number Three – Health Diagnostic Laboratory

We know the third of five companies pitching to a panel of angel investors during CVG’s LiveFire! ™, the afternoon session of the inaugural VT KnowledgeWorks Entrepreneurship Summit this Thursday, April 2, 2009 – Health Diagnostic Laboratory.

From Tonya Mallory, President, CEO, and co-founder of Health Diagnostic Laboratory, Inc.:

Health Diagnostic Laboratory, Inc. (HDL, Inc.) is located in the Virginia BioTechnology Research Park in Richmond, VirginiaWe are so very pleased to be selected to present at CVG Live Fire. This event is an excellent opportunity for the investment community to learn more about chronic disease, our passion to improve this problem, and our approach on how we plan to negatively impact the chronic disease epidemic.

Health Diagnostic Laboratory, Inc. (HDL, Inc.) is a fully CAP/CLIA accredited clinical laboratory focused on disease management with supporting clinical laboratory testing targeting patients with cardiovascular disease (CVD), heart failure, stroke, diabetes mellitus (DM), metabolic syndrome (MS), and nonalcoholic steatohepatitis or fatty liver disease (NASH).  We are located in the Virginia BioTechnology Research Park in Richmond, Virginia.

We are turning the traditional model of clinical laboratory testing on its head.  HDL, Inc. is founded on the idea that in order to impact the alarming increase in chronic disease, it is necessary to approach the disease and treatment with an understanding that involves our company, physicians and their patients. We are not performing wellness or health screening. Instead, we start with the patients that have known disease (heart disease, diabetes, metabolic syndrome and fatty liver disease) and we diligently work with physicians and their patients to get these patients with disease to a healthy state.

We perform testing in order for physicians to understand the individual disease from a systems approach…we are looking for the exact “broken” part that is creating the disease. We focus on the underlying causes of illness based on real research and real results and that requires that we examine emerging biomarkers that are more indicative of the mechanics of affected systems. Once that information is known, physicians can select individualized treatment plans that will affect the needed corrections of that “broken” part for each patient.

Once the treatment plan is decided, we will be working directly with patients, initially through web portals, to make sure they are compliant with the plan, educate them on their lab tests and results, educate and explain treatments and answer any questions to make sure they can comply comfortably. These dashboards will be presented simplistically. Envision a speedometer… everyone starts in the red because they have disease and we walk them through the paces from red to yellow to green, with green being healthy. Therefore, we are managing the disease to diagnose health.

This concept of health management is a step beyond disease diagnosis and incorporates several popular concepts such as disease management, personalized medicine, patient self-management and education.

The goal for all patients is health which is a built-in measurement of outcomes for every patient. If the selected treatment plan is not affecting the needed changes, patients will be aware of this and eager to comply with physician changes to their treatment plan.

We look forward letting you know more about HDL, Inc. when we're in Blacksburg on Thursday, April 2.
