I described meeting Steven Mackay, College of Engineering Communications Coordinator, at the visit of Google CEO Eric Schmidt to Blacksburg, Virginia, October 23, 2008.

I asked for the top three cool things going on in the engineering school at Virginia Tech.  Steven sent me four.  Here's Cool Thing #1, Cool Thing #2, and Cool Thing #3.

Here's Cool Thing #4:

Virginia Tech professor wants to inspire school children from his hometown

Dr. Joseph Freeman, an assistant professor at the Virginia Tech – Wake Forest University School of Biomedical Engineering and Sciences Dr. Joseph Freeman, an assistant professor at the Virginia Tech – Wake Forest University School of Biomedical Engineering and Sciences and director of the Musculoskeletal Tissue Regeneration Laboratory, teaches graduate students in Fundamentals of Tissue Function Structure and Replacement.

He has a different set of students, also hungry for knowledge of science, hundreds of miles away from Blacksburg, Virginia, that aren’t quite ready for college yet.

In his native Newark, New Jersey, Freeman has been working with his mother, a teacher at Alexander Street Elementary School, to provide school children in the third through eighth grades with DVDs showing the work he is doing in Blacksburg.
